Time Out New York

It's daunting enough to enter the rarefied world of NYC's most exclusive prep schools, but for the young subjects of Kavery Kaul's poignant documentary, the adjustment is especially challenging. Kaul's camera follows three plucky ninth graders --- Cindy, the daughter of Cambodian refugees, devout Muslim Sarah and African-American Brooklynite Sage --- as they leave their insular communities for the first time and confront closed-minded classmates, ignorant comments and the requisite curricular drags, like having to sing "Danny Boy" in choir. Fortunately, the girls' candor and gentle humor make their first encounter with diversity compelling to watch.
